The CELL Responds to Shooting at Holocaust Museum

DENVER, JUNE 11, 2009The Center for Empowered Living and Learning (The CELL) issued a statement in response to yesterday’s shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.:

We are saddened and appalled by today’s shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and by the loss of Stephen Johns, the museum’s security guard.  The gunman, James von Brunn, a known white supremacist and Holocaust denier who remains in critical condition, will not succeed in espousing ignorance and hate at the expense of truth and tolerance.

The fact that this act took place in an institution dedicated to educating the public about the horrific events of the Holocaust and the dangers of intolerance makes it even more disturbing. As an institution that seeks to first educate, and then empower people to rise up against hatred and violence, we are emboldened in our mission and committed to fighting those who would resort to violent acts in order to convey a deep-rooted hateful ideology.

At The CELL, we believe that education is the primary way to prevent future attacks.  We hope that Americans take this opportunity to learn more about ways they can become engaged and ultimately empowered to make a positive difference in the face of hatred and violence.
